scaffolding light sculpture

In August of 2016 I assisted light designer Jason Krugman in building two large light fixtures (approximately 6' by 10') to hang above the sidewalk on either side of the awning for the Beekman hotel in lower Manhattan during the buildings construction. Each piece was a sculpted mesh sheet of 3/8" diameter aluminum wire held together by custom 3D printed pieces to connect the intersections.

splyt light wall

In July 2016 Kickstarter held an event at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, New York to showcase a select number of creative projects that had achieved funding through their platform. One of these projects was a product that allows you to create your own light fixture from a kit that comes with a series of light socket splitters and extenders. I built and installed an eight foot by eight foot freestanding wall containing sixty light sockets to display a variety of different combinations that can be made with splyt light. The wall is built modularly and has been used at trade shows since.

Quad Helix

In the fall and winter of 2015/2016 I assisted light designer, Jason Krugman, in fabricating a two story light fixture for a cruise ship.  The piece was composed of brass and acrylic. It was so large we had to build it in two separate parts and almost completely disassemble it to crate it to be sent to the ship yard where the boat was being built in Italy.

In March 2016, Krugman Studio designed, fabricated and installed a 21-ft tall spiraling brass light sculpture for the Konigsdamm, a new luxury cruiseliner by Holland America. The sculpture was built in two separate sections in Brooklyn and shipped to Italy for installation on board the ship. Titled, Quad Helix, the artwork incorporates parabolic curves and dozens of custom LED light elements. It runs on low-voltage DC and consumes under 200 watts of electricity. To create the sculptures intricately twisting structure, the team heated brass tubing to over 1000 degrees F with oxyacetylene torches, and used gravity, heat and water to control its movement and ductility. A set of custom bending jigs were created to slump and pull the brass tubing into its final spiraling paths.

the happy film premiere at the tribeca film festival

The happy film, based on Stefan Sagmeister's happy show, is a feature-legnth documentary in which graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister tries a series of experiments in an attempt to have a meaningful impact on his own happiness. For its Tribeca film festival premiere he wanted to recreat a feature from the original show but in a mobile fashion. I helped design and build ten wearabe gum ball machines. Passers by at the premiere were asked to take a gum ball from one of the machines numbered one through ten based on how happy they were feeling that day.
